Brown top millet, known as dhuthurai in Tamil, is one of the rarest and most nutrient-dense millets available today. Once a forgotten grain, it is now recognised as one of the most fibre-rich millets among all the Siridhanya varieties. Unpolished, gluten-free, and naturally grown with minimal water, this is a grain that is good for your body and for the planet.

Why Brown Top Millet

  • Highest dietary fibre among all millets at approximately 12.5g per 100g
  • Protein content of around 11.5g per 100g, well above white rice
  • Low glycaemic index of around 50, ideal for diabetics and blood sugar management
  • Rich in magnesium and potassium for heart health and blood pressure regulation
  • Good source of iron, phosphorus, and calcium for bones and red blood cell formation
  • Naturally gluten-free and suitable for those with gluten sensitivity

The high fibre content makes brown top millet particularly effective for gut health. It promotes regular bowel movements, acts as a prebiotic feeding good gut bacteria, and supports overall digestive function. Its low GI combined with high fibre also makes it one of the better grains for sustained energy and appetite control.

How to Use

Cook it as a rice substitute with dal or curry, prepare a light upma or khichdi, or grind into flour for dosas and rotis. It has a mild, earthy flavour and cooks to a soft, slightly chewy texture. For best results, cook with cold-pressed coconut oil for a clean, neutral flavour that lets the grain shine.

Pair dhuthurai with foxtail millet (thinai) or barnyard millet (kuthiraivali) for a well-rounded millet rotation. For a quick millet breakfast, our millet health mix and foxtail millet pongal mix are wholesome and ready in minutes.

Weight: 500g | No preservatives. No artificial colour. No added flavour.
