Description

Karuppu kavuni rice is Tamil Nadu’s most celebrated heritage grain, once reserved exclusively for royalty and temple offerings. Known as Emperor’s rice, this deep purple-black variety gets its distinctive colour from anthocyanins, the same powerful antioxidants found in blueberries and blackberries. It is one of the most nutrient-dense rice varieties available, with a nutritional profile that polished white rice cannot match.

Our black rice is naturally processed, unpolished, and free from chemical treatment. It retains its bran layer, which is where the antioxidants, iron, and fibre are concentrated.

Why Karuppu Kavuni Rice

  • Exceptionally rich in anthocyanins, natural antioxidants that reduce inflammation and protect heart health
  • Good source of iron for healthy blood levels and energy
  • High in dietary fibre for digestion, gut health, and sustained satiety
  • Lower glycaemic index than white rice, suitable for diabetics and blood sugar management
  • Contains protein, magnesium, zinc, and B vitamins for overall health
  • Naturally gluten-free and free from artificial processing

How to Use

Karuppu kavuni rice has a slightly nutty flavour and a firm, slightly chewy texture when cooked. Soak for 30 to 60 minutes before cooking, then pressure cook with 2.5 cups of water per cup of rice. Use it as everyday rice with sambar or rasam, prepare the traditional kavuni arisi sweet with coconut milk and jaggery, make idli or dosa batter, or cook as a nourishing kanji. Cook with cold-pressed coconut oil for an authentic South Indian finish.

For a ready-to-drink karuppu kavuni option, our karuppu kavuni rice kanji mix delivers the same heritage grain as a quick morning porridge. For more traditional Tamil rice varieties, our mappillai samba rice and Thooya Malli rice are equally worth exploring.
