Description
Thooya Malli Rice is one of Tamil Nadu’s most treasured heritage rice varieties. Its name comes from the Tamil words thooya meaning pure and malli meaning jasmine, a nod to its pearly white grains, slender form, and the subtle floral fragrance it releases when cooked. Cultivated for centuries in the fertile Cauvery delta region, this traditional rice variety has recently been granted a Geographical Indication tag, recognising its unique origin and authentic cultivation practices.
Unlike highly polished commercial white rice, thooyamalli rice retains more of its natural nutrients and has a lower glycaemic index of around 57, making it a gentler choice for blood sugar management. It is rich in calcium, protein, iron, and antioxidants, and is traditionally valued in Siddha and Ayurvedic practice for its easy digestibility and nerve-strengthening properties.
